An integral part of the design project is the folio, which in line with your diary, makes up 45% of your design project's marks.
The essential reading is: The Design Steps, which details how you are to work the Design Project, both practically and the all important folio work and design diary.
The folio Word template is linked here.
The folio is a complete record of your project's design and development. Topics that need to be addressed are:
The Design Challenge
1/. Cover Page. (To include an image of your project, together with your project title and your name).
2/. Table of Contents (TOC).
3/. The Analysis of the Design Challenge. (What you intend to do in your design project).
4/. The Design Problem being met is: (Explain here what you intend to achieve).
The Criteria for Success. (How are you going to complete the design project effectively).
5/. Design Specifications (Here you need to identify and describe at least four specifications (features, or necessary details) that are appropriate for this design challenge).
6/. Technology Available for Production -
(List all materials and equipment, also software required to complete this project).
7/. List any Design Limitations. (This could be limitations of the software, the school server storage space, you need upskilling in equipment usage).
8/. Characteristics:
How big or small. -
(What shape? Ease of use? Efficiency)
Time Frame Constraints. - (How long have you got to produce this product?)
Safety of the Finished Product. (Where applicable).
Describe safety considerations (That will apply to the completed project that will be designed by you and used by others).
9/. Research Skills
Here you need to show what your research component was and where did you research - website URL's.
What materials (if any), equipment and software was used for your design project.
10/. Production Techniques (not applicable to all design projects).
The ergonomic factors that may apply to your project.
The Safety Factors that maybe related to your design project
Another Product Review – Have a look at an existing product and determine how it could be innovated/improved.
11/. Existing Products/Designs/Projects/Finished Works - (you researched and used in your design process)
Collect images of existing products, websites suitable to your design project that are already available on the market, off the Internet. Use this as your product comparison – to improve upon, or customise your project.
12/. Idea Development - this could involve Sketching, Taking notes, Flow charts, Diagrams, Screen Dumps of the Project Development Mind mapping Inspiration Software, as well as Brainstorming.
(You should present your ideas through clear and accurate images/scanned drawings/sketches/screen dumps It is also important to include plenty of summarised notes.
Your notes should include most of the following information):
- A Description/explanation of your project.
- How your idea works .
- Its functions and features.
- It's materials and properties.
- Estimated cost (only where applicable, and in most design projects this is not required).
- Overall size of the design project.
- Safety/WHS considerations (where applicable).
- Ergonomics in the design.
- Customer/age group/target market.
- Colour scheme / finish.
- Your thoughts on the final design project?
- Your final (summative evaluation of your design project.
